Wisdom Teeth Removal in Bardstown, KY

Third Molar Extraction

Wisdom teeth begin to erupt sometime between the ages of 17 and 25. These are the last adult teeth to come in, and many patients do not have the room for these large molars. Because of this, complications due to wisdom teeth are very common.

Since wisdom teeth are not essential to bite and function, many dental health professionals recommend removing wisdom teeth before they erupt to prevent complications from occurring.

Dr. Livesay, Dr. Carey, and Dr. Naselsker are board-certified oral surgeons at Innovative Oral Surgery & Dental Implant Studio. Our practice regularly performs wisdom teeth removal at our state-of-the-art practice in Bardstown, KY. If you or your child need wisdom teeth removed, we encourage you to contact our practice for a consultation.

Why Should Wisdom Teeth Be Removed?

Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, are the last teeth to erupt and are found at the very back of the mouth.

Wisdom teeth can cause a host of oral health issues, such as pain, infection, impaction, dental shifting, dental crowding, cysts and tumors, and more. Since these complications are so common with wisdom teeth, extracting these teeth before issues arise is commonly recommended.

Many dental health professionals recommend wisdom teeth be removed during the early to mid-teen years. This is because the teeth are undeveloped, therefore smaller and easier to remove. Your dentist will monitor the growth and development of your teeth during regular dental checkups and can refer you to an oral surgeon when the time is right.

However, not all wisdom teeth need to be removed. Your dentist or oral surgeon will discuss your individual condition and recommended treatment with you.

Signs and Symptoms of Wisdom Teeth

Signs and symptoms of wisdom teeth include:

  • Red or swollen gums
  • Pain in the jaw
  • Sore or bleeding gums
  • Bad breath
  • Bad taste in the mouth

Your general dentist will monitor your wisdom teeth as they grow and develop during your regular checkup appointments. However, if you are experiencing any of the above signs and symptoms, please contact our office for further evaluation.

Wisdom Teeth Extraction

During your first visit to our office, you will meet with your oral surgeon, who will review or take any necessary imaging, perform an oral examination, and create a plan for treatment. Anesthesia options will also be discussed at this appointment. This first visit is also a great time to ask any questions you may have.

Your surgery will start with the administration of anesthesia, which may include local anesthetic, nitrous oxide, or IV sedation. The type of anesthesia used will be selected during your consultation.

Once you are comfortable, your surgeon will remove the tooth. If the tooth has already erupted, it can be removed just like a general tooth extraction.

Impacted wisdom teeth, or teeth that have not yet erupted, will require your surgeon to make an incision in the gum tissue, expose the tooth, and then remove it. Once the teeth have been removed, the surgical sites will be closed with sutures.

Immediately following your procedure, you will rest comfortably in one of our state-of-the-art surgical suites until the anesthesia has worn off.

Types of Anesthesia

Our practice offers several forms of anesthesia.
